In the school setting Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapist Assistants are professionals who evaluate and assess children ages 0 to 26 years. The focus is on the child’s ability to participate in educational related activities. Therapists use their unique expertise to assist teachers and parents in helping students reach their potential.
WHAT WE DO…
- We support the achievement of developmental and learning outcomes for children with and without disabilities.
- As a team member we evaluate children to help determine present levels of performance.
- Evaluations may include: Sensory, visual motor and visual perceptual, gross and fine motor, self-help skills related to the school environment and assistive technology.
- Consult with parents and teachers on strategies, adaptations and accommodations for attention, auditory, physical and movement needs.
- Observe children in the environments where activities naturally occur (gym, playground, classroom, home, cafeteria and community).
- Participate as a team member in functional behavior assessments as requested.
- We are a resource for specialized equipment (sensory break equipment for calming and alerting, alternative means for writing, positioning equipment, wheelchairs, orthotics, and assistive technology).
- Environmental assessments for accessibility to the school, classroom, and playground.
- Collaborate with the medical community to coordinate services.
- Direct individualized therapy as well as modeling for teachers, classroom aides and parents.
- Informally monitor progress of children at risk.
- May participate in evaluations to identify children with autism.
- May participate in evaluations for early childhood developmental disabilities.
Physical and Occupational therapy in school settings differs from the clinical setting: school related services are provided in the child’s home, play group or school versus a clinic.
